About the artwork:

Jean-Michel Basquiat, Boy and Dog in a Johnny Pump, 1982

Boy and Dog in a Johnny Pump is a large-scale neo-expressionist artwork. It depicts a skeletal black boy and his dog standing centrally amidst the chaotic energy of an open fire hydrant.  The painting's vibrant colors convey a sense of urban heat, while the raw, almost childlike figures reflect themes of identity and the energy of city life. Boy and Dog in a Johnny Pump is an important piece for Basquiat because it showcases his signature chaotic style, explores themes of race and identity within an urban landscape, and is considered one of his most iconic works from his breakthrough year of 1982.
