About the artwork:
Jean-Michel Basquiat, Hollywood Africans in front of the Chinese Theater with Footprints of Movie Stars, 1983
The painting shows Basquiat, along with artists Toxic and Rammellzee, during a period when they were all in Los Angeles for Basquiat's first exhibition at the Larry Gagosian Gallery. It serves as a commentary on the marginalization and stereotyping of African Americans in the entertainment industry, which led the group to refer to themselves as "Hollywood Africans."
