About the artwork:

Jean-Michel Basquiat, King Pleasure, 1987

King Pleasure was the stage name of a jazz vocalist who began his career as a bartender. His first hit, "Moody's Mood For Love," gained him popularity in 1952. The song was a favorite of the WBLS DJ Frankie Crocker, who played it at the close of his show every night in the 1970s. Jean-Michel's inspiration for this piece came from the vocalist and his father, Gerard Basquiat, who loved the song.

For Jean-Michel, the crown represented the struggle for power and recognition, particularly for marginalized communities. By incorporating crowns into his paintings and drawings, he celebrated these groups' strength while critiquing the systems that sought to oppress them.
