About the artwork:
Jean-Michel Basquiat, Charles the First, 1982
Painted by Jean-Michel in 1982, a breakout year in his storied career, Charles the First pays homage to jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker, whose nickname was "Bird," a leading figure in the development of bebop. The painting also features a crown, an iconic element found in much of Basquiat’s work symbolizing the struggle for power and recognition, particularly for marginalized communities. On the bottom left of the canvas, Jean-Michel wrote: "Most young kings get their head cut off." with the word "young" crossed out, a phrase that went on to inspire rapper Jay-Z's song "Most Kingz."
